Measures stored iron levels in the body. A blood test that measures the level of ferritin, a protein that stores iron in the body. It is the most sensitive marker of the body's total iron stores.
Purpose of the Test
Detect iron deficiency anaemia or iron overload. Used to diagnose iron deficiency or iron overload, investigate anaemia, and monitor patients undergoing iron supplementation or treatment for iron-related conditions.
Preparation Required
No fasting required (morning sample preferred for consistency). Avoid iron supplements for 24 hours before collection, where possible and inform your professional of any current medications or ongoing treatment.
